Parsnips? Till the end of April normally, but I should try to sow a row as soon as possible. Why not?

I heard you could sow until quite late, like July, if you don't mind small parsnips. I sowed my first ever parsnips (chitted first) today. :D

Slightly off topic but my packet was bought in 2002 and left unopen for 5 years... I didn't think it would germinate at all so I'm very surprised most seeds started to show roots in a short time. :D

Must admit, that after very low germination for the past two years, I have left sowing late this year. With the rain expected this W/E - got a good row in yesterday. Have a back up in the greenhouse, 40 plants in peat pots just in case, & they're pocking through!

If you sow later than the normal time for your area,you will generally get less canker. When the seed germinates the very first root is your parsnip and from then on all it does is get bigger. Canker is a fungal problem which needs damage to get in and if after germinating you get hard frost this is enough to start canker.I realized this after having to sow late and was pleased to hear it mentioned at a lecture by a Sutton's rep.

at this time would you recommend sowing in pots or only direct? my April direct sowing is looking patchy at best and wonder if a good module start would still be viable now?

Just today planted out my nips, sown in toilet roll tubes. Got approx 75% germination in 2 weeks in the GH, and every tube had at least 2 or 3 seedlings in except one which only had the one in.
Having said that, with the forecast rain over the weekend and into the start of the week, they may do OK sown direct (since the soil is much warmer now), if we get a spell when it's dry enough to get to the plot, so may give that a try too.

Hi all,
First post on this forum. Was just wondering what compost you use to sow the Parsnips in the toilet rolls?  As it seems is happening with nearly everyone, I have been getting patchy germination for the last few years.
I have tried baring a hole in the ground and filling with cheap multi purpose, but the Parsnip just fanged.

I'm using M/P from Homebase Tiercel... haven't done it before... in tubes.
I'm also putting a row in direct after this rainy weekend...

As I seem to be seriously lagging behind this year, haven't planted any yet.

I thought it was too late but will try to sow a few rows and see what happens.

No point in seed just sitting in the tin!

hey coznbob, you're doing our trick then, we're seriously behind everyone else on our site - but we're blaming it on being newbies  ;)  ;D  next year we will be much more organised, honest  :-\

      Is fish, blood & bone a manure or a fertiliser for root crops?.

Well I am going to have a play here. Yesterday I was given 4 unopened packets of parsnips from a lottie friend who said she didn't have time to do anything with them and they would be no good next year. Mine are already growing but I will have a go. They are in date. I am going to chit them inside. XX Jeannine

If the weather ever improves again, I shall be trying another row or two, out of my 3 rows, only 1 'snip survived, don't think it will be enough to feed us this winter! ;D (for me they are normally the one veg I can grow easily! :-\)

It will be interesting to see what we all get.

I  now have 4 lots in the airing cupboard sitting on wet tissue  in Tupperware containers. Fingers crossed.

Isn't it cold!!!
Only 9' outside so I don't think my parsnips will germinate this year(again).
It takes so long for results to show, I think my back-up strategy will be needed.
The weather's gone bonkers.

Update on my parsnip experiment.

4 types went on wet paper towel in individual Tupperware containers on May 27th.

Hollow Crown,Dagger,Javelin and Tender and True.

Today, I have germination already on about 1/3rd of the Javelin but nothing on the others,this is just 4 days.
