Leeks - no room at the Inn

I have just about filled my plot with everything & the gaps I have left are for stuff in seed trays over the next 2-3 weeks. Forgot to leave room for my leeks! They are all in a seed tray about 6 inches high.

My options are:
1) stay in the tray till my first early spuds are ready.
2) spread them around the plot where there is the odd gap.
3) forget about those in current seed trays, start another seed tray and transplant them later.
4) any other suggestion welcome.

I would try and squeeze them in but those you cant fit try

- black bins as pots
- cut the top off plastic milk bottles
- use 2 ltr fizzy drink bottles

share with other allotment holders  ;D

I plant mine after I have cleared some of my early potatoes.

But this will depend upon variety mine are winter varieties so they have plenty of time to mature by then.

I've got the rest of mine in a black bucket waiting for space.

We use Musselburgh a lot and they will wait until the first earlies are out so option one. If you can pot them on they will appreciate it, or heel them in... if neither then feed them as the nutrients in multi purpose compost will have gone and they will turn yellow and sickly. If you can't do that they will forgive you and recover once in the ground!

You could follow suit with me! It will be another three or for weeks yet before I plant mine out!

I've got a 3" pot with musselbrough in - bought it back in March and haven't done anything with them as they are not what I would call pencil width yet - can someone please explain 'heeling in'. 

I was given some by a friend last year and so didn't plant them until July, but I don't think they like being in their little pot (probably about 20 of them in there) ... maybe they've not got enough room to grow into pencils ?

Pot them on, and put them in after the spuds.  I do this every year, I use a fairly deep container (deeper than the usual seed tray), dib holes with a pencil, trim the roots and tops and pop them in.  They'll grow on happily till you have room.

another "heeling in" ignoramus here in need of clarification.

I've got a rather full black bucket worth of Musselburgh just waiting for the bed to be dug.
