Hi peeps hows your braod beans doing? are they ready for picking? are they already been eaten, or not even planted out yet.

we've had our first signs of black fly and will be trying some rhubarb water on them this week.

Yes we have had one picking. Planted in November, did`nt even put cloches over them all come up no probs. ;D

Sorry - been eating Aquadulce for a fortnight now. (OK - cradle-snatching for the first couple of times.) Spring-sown beans have just (yesterday) had the tops off. To be fair, my only previous attempt at autumn-sown beans was a non-event. Just happens that this year we've had a mild winter. Different next year.

My Aquadulce Claudia were planted late and are coming into flower. The red-flowered aren't up yet.

I harvested our first lot yesterday had 800g in total. There don't seem many more pods left so that may be my only lot.

We are in full harvest now - Aquedulce, planted in November and the overwintered peas are just about to crop.

After  the cold spring last year my Aquadulce didn't grop as well as the ones I sowed in Feb - so this year decided to give the fleecing in the evening and dfleecing the next morning a miss and only have plantd mine in early march. All in flower now but it will be a good month before I am eating them.
Luckily I am the only one in the household that likes them so they will be all mine.  ;D

One and a half kilos (shelled weight) from yesterdays harvest, about the same to take again next week! :) Froze two thirds, and ate the rest last night- very tasty too!

 i picked a dozen or so of the biggest Aquathingies last week only to find the beans were the size of peas.  Very tasty though.  Plenty more pods forming as long as they survive this wretched wind.  Poor things have been fair bashed about this week.

November sown Aqua Dulche are just showing their first pods. Quite an exciting discovery!

Interestingly, the November sown (from the same packet) are more straggly and gappy than the February sown, all of which came up in formation heights and bushyness. The Novembers look like poor, neglected relations in comparison and are the ones suffering from blackfly.

Any idea why this is?

Sowed Jubilee Hysor in root trainers beginning of Feb, put them in ground end March.   Imperial Green Longpod sowed directly in ground at end Feb, they took AGES to germinate, got a little bit chewed by an animal or two, so I panicked and brought on some Bunyards Exhibition in trainers, and they went in the ground early April. The JH and BEs are just past the full flower stage, and I took the tops off yesterday. The IGLs are slow blighters, just flowering now.

Had our first broad beans last week with new pots and bacon. I love them when they are small and sweet. We grew aquadulce for over wintering and also some Sutton Dwarf that are flowering now. Am going to grow more over wintering this year.
