Did anyone see "Nenah and Andi serve it up" just now.  They bought flower heads from Covent Garden Market to serve in their salad.  I know we can use rose petals from the garden, as long as they haven't been sprayed but what about pansies and violas grown in the garden?  I have autumn bedded pansies that have come back in all their glory and the weed version of viola, can we eat the petals on these? Really thinking about what's flowering now or shortly to come. Don't really like nasturtiums, was put off years ago eating the seed head!  :)

I knew I'd read this somewhere, just read an article..flowers of courgettes, all the marrow family, even day lilies..every bit of the flowering onion, chive blossom, garlic flowers, flower buds off broccoli and overblown cauli..pea blossom, not sweet peas, they're poisonous, ..if you want flowers, try edible chrysanthemum, sweet violet, roses, but remove the bases, carnations and pinks, cornflowers, pelargoniums, violas, pansies, dandelions..the blooms of queen annes lace, fuschia and gardenia, lavender flowers..it says on n account eat anything from a florist r nursery as they may have been sprayed..eat in small quantities in case of allergies,
this is from grow your own magazine for may, you can read it online

Jeannine

But most of them not flowering now.  My pansies are and so are the weed violas with roses within the next week I reckon. As it feels like summer the salads must start to fly now, old " Mrs Impatient" here! Shamrock's out, wallflowers and wisteria too. Can you eat the dandelion flower, I know the baby leaves can go in salad? Does it matter which variety I have?  So many questions sorry  :-[

Grandma

Think I remember reading on here that some A4A folks are asthma/hayfever sufferers - or have children who are? Don't want to be a spoil sport but wantedf to draw your attention to the 'small print' - right at the end of the edible flowers link.

*Only the petals of these composite flowers are edible. The pollen of composite flowers is highly allergenic and may cause reactions in sensitive individuals. Sufferers of asthma, ragweed, and hayfever should not consume composite flowers, and may have extreme allergies to ingesting any flowers at all.

Better safe than sorry, eh?  ;)

Thank you all, and to Grandma. Daughter suffers from hayfever so will be careful.  :)
