The potatoes I'm growing in an old compost bag need topping up. Is it best to use compost (I've got peat-free multipurpose) or garden soil, or doesn't it matter? They are in amix of old & new compost at the moment.

we just bung whatever we've got in,  ;D

I sieve garden soil & use that.....sieve cos I don't want to import worms or slugs :)

If it is old compost a lot of the nutrients will have been used up so feed regularly as potatoes like a lot of nutrients...

Really, saddad? I always thought they weren't that fussy!Just a general feed?

We have just today, set some sprouting supermarket salad spuds into old compost sacks to keep at home, rather than risk taking any diseases to the plot. We used some of last years compost from other veg etc(all container grown at home), and mixed in a good dose of Aldis pelleted chicken manure. Will have to get more fresh compost to top up as they grow since we have no more "used" compost left now.
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

I mix in whatever I've got with a top up of stable manure.  Potatos liek a good feed & it helps keep plenty of water in the bags so they can swell
is it in the sale?

What about the eggs Alishka?  ::)

As far as backfill is concerned I wouldn't use garden soil on its own, it tends to 'cake'

Perhaps a mixture of garden soil and compost with a handfull of a general fertiliser in it  would be better.

This is just an opinion!!  I never grow them this way so I am no expert!
