well, you're going to get loads of advice from loads of nice people..we grow onions from seed, long red florence, paris silverskin, the pickling ones, bedfordshire champion, mixed globe and various spring onions, also a variety called ishikura, japanese that grows like a leek
we also grow from sets..some of ours went to seed last year, think it was the dry weather..as you can see, we like onions
sets are now in the raised beds, seeds have been started in pots, then they will be transplanted into cells, then in to the ground..I don't know how much you know but we plant in between beetroot, around beans and wherever there's a space..
so, that's how we grow them..good luck    ;D

I get my onoins already growing in cells......around 8 in each cell.Grow them on and pick them like spring onoins if the fancy takes you and leave the rest in to swell.......................much easier than setting the seed myself and not very expensive either.
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

sorry, cells are just a group of pots attached to each other, usually 6, 10 or more ..which ones, I'll have to tell you at the end of the season..anyone else?

i plant sets. in fact i planted mine out today.  i plant them so that the tip of the bulb is about a half to one inch below the surface; about six inches apart and enough space between rows to get the hoe in.  they usually do fine for me and they are one of the first things i plant eaach season (bit later than usual this year cos of the rain).  a lot of peeps on my site were planting spuds out today but i will leave mine for a week or two yet.
