Garlic

Hope someone can help, I planted my garlic back in the autumn and they are doing great, however on close inspection they seem to be yellowing at the tips. Is this too much water (they are on clay) or do they need a Nitrogen boost? If so is it too early, will I get too much soft growth that will be damaged by frost?

I think you have answered your own question/s

I will be feeding mine at the end of the month when the ground should be a bit warmer.

If you do it when the ground is very cold the chances are the plants won't take it up.

The yellowing on the outer leaves is quite normal

As the clove splits the plant will send up more shoots which should look quite healthy.

Mine have been yellowing too, and I was wondering why, so thanks for asking the question as it has helped me too :-)

mine garlic planted before christmas has also started to yellow but i was just going to leave it and see what happens.

The garlic i planted 2 weeks ago have all mostly shot up so i think if they all come good i will have a couple of kg for the end of the year :-) woops

Tim, how close are your garlic?  The packet said 6" so I dutifully obeyed, and now am wondering if I could have got away with using less land!?

If I may add to the general garlic query of this thread with elephant garlic: planted at the end of January and still no sign.  Never grown it before and the other garlic varieties were up in less time.  Is this my impatience or is the timing right? Just worried that I left it too late or that they've rotted away.  No, sorry, haven't had a chance to dig one up yet!

My autum planted garlic is also yellowing at the tips. What would I need to feed it with? I'm sure it's quite simple but I always seem fazed by what feed/fertilizer to use where and when.

Ours are nearer 4" - but I only have a 2mX1m rot free site. The ones in the middle are closer - the runts for green garlic.

Feed? The expert says N & K.

i just pushed mine in where they fitted after all i did plant 1/2 a kilo!

Rake/fork in a top dressing of nitro chalk or similar high nitrogen fertiliser. at 60gms/sq metre (2oz/sq yd)

Keep the area weed-free, garlic is shallow rooted therefore it will suffer if the competition for water and nutrients is too great.

Mine often comes up looking a bit yellow, but soon greens up. I put them 9 inches apart.

I grow them about 6 inches apart and aside from a bit of weeding, ignore them until they're ready to harvest (except for watering). But I am a lazzzzy woman. Yellowing doesn't appear to affect them much.

I would never dispute what suits the other person, TG, but my offering was a quote from The Garlic Farm -

"N and K. Hope you enjoy Ready Steady Cook"

I've only used K before ,because I thought that that was their practice, but this year we're trying both.

And while we're here, speaking of using s/market bulbs, if you'd seen the ones in Tesco today, you would be mad if you did. Not a decent sized clove amongst them!
