thought this might be interesting, I will add pics and a brief description as it go's through the transformation from a lump of wood (a nice piece of she oak lovely grain and super hard) and a bit of brass rod 1" diameter approx

;D

she oak has been oiled with walnut oil then coated in wax to stop it splitting it stays like this for about two years until its ready to work its about half a kg at the mo

will post pics of the first rough cut and oil in a couple of days

marestail murderer

cant wait too see this completed tim..........i assume you will be turning the she oak on a lathe?

tim k

yes i will be started last night once i have the rough shape i will post some more pics :)

tim k

Now the shape has been cut (roughed out) the grain has started to show now

tim k

If you look closely in the back ground as I'm taking the pics you might even see Sid the seven legged spider not sure how long spiders live but he has been there at least three years ;D

carolinej

That's brilliant :o

I wish I could do that sort of thing. The way I make dibbers is the good old fashioned 'snap a spade' method :-[

cj :)

Marymary

That is so clever, obviously Sid's impressed as he's hung around for so long to see the final result.  :)

tim

You've whetted my appetite - the smell of the oak, turning, must be great?

emmy1978

Fab! reminds me of Fred, my Grandads friend and his workshop. He helped me make a pair of stilts when I was about 8. I still need them actually, but as tim says, the smell of turning wood...mmmm.
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

tim k

This bit is a bit old Tim. It traveled from Australia and it has been drying for about two years but cedar is lovely to turn and fills the whole garden with sent :)

Well done Tim it looks great

Would love to be able to do some thing like that - but not got the skills

tim k

Top bannana Tim I have written out my order I will pm you before the others get in.    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

tim k

;D ;D ;D  it now has an ebony point just need to make the brass tip then start the finishing process

more pics when the camera is charged :(

kenkew

Looking good, Tim. I really regret leaving my wood turning lathe in the UK. To see the wood change from a 'block' to the round and then with a bit of M3 and a touch of sanding sealer all in a short space of time is a real delight....I'm not only a little envious....nice.

Ricado

growing, growing, growing, growing, growing ...sleeping

tim k
