Can anyone recommend a stringless sugar snap pea? I'd prefer a tall variety, if possible, but failing that I see that Unwins are advertising Delikett as stringless. Has anyone tried it?

We love the sugar snaps but got fed up last year with all the string on ours.

Two Choices

Apple, Our choice is Dobies Sugar Crystal, not stringless though. We find it best to 'de string' before cooking. TC

Have you tried Oregon Sugar Pod? I didn't find that at all stringy..

I agree with fluffygrue, we have grown Suttons Oregon Sugar Pod for many years have never found any stringy ones. I like to pick and eat them while working on other crops.

I think that Delicata and Oregon are Mange Tout peas, usually picked while they are still young and flat.
Snap peas have very thick fleshy pods.
I do not know about Sugar Crystal.

Hi ,Oregon Sugar Pod is what is called a snow pea in Canada, here  a snow pea is  a mangetout. A snap pea is also a snap pea over there. The mangetout is eaten as what I call empty pods and with  the snap pea one eats the whole pod with the mature peas inside. In seed catalogues they are listed seperately over there.

Oregon Sugar Pea,Oregon Giant are mangetouts.
Sugar Snap,Mega and Sugar Daddy  are snap peas.

I usually grow both.I have never had strings on Oregon Sugar Pea, but I always pick it very young, once the teeny peas inside start to swell it will get stringy. If I want one with peas inside I  pick the Sugar Snap.
There is absolutely no strings on Sugar Daddy even when mature and only on Sugar Snap if left too long on the vine, but I prefer Sugar Snap as they grow to 6 feet and I can trellis them with my beans. They are the sweetest.

In all probablity I will be sending for the snap peas this week if I cannot find them here.I usually only buy them every two or three years.

Wouldn't recommend Delikat, as have found them stringy even when young. Interesting to see Jeannine mention snow peas, last year I bought a packet labelled Chinese Snow peas from Australia, described as a climbing snap pea. They were excellent, climber easily up some chicken wire to about 5 - 6ft, very prolific, and not at all stringy even when the peas were fully developed inside them. Haven't seen them in the Uk so if anyone does I'd be very pleased to know so I can buy more.

I have a packet of Delikata to sow!!!
There does seem to be some confusion between mange-tout and snap peas in the catalogues. In all the three seed catalogues that I have just looked at, Oregon sugar pod is described as a mange-tout, and the photos show a flat pea pod.
There is a snap pea called Sugar Ann, which has round fleshy pods. And another called Sugar Lord which has round fleshy pods.
My Sister lives in Australia and grows Snow Peas.

I grew Sugar Ann last year as a trial (cheap seeds from Lidl) on my new plot.  Grew to about 2' high and cropped well.  Nice sweet peas.  Lance
Getting there - just rather slowly!!

Hi I sent an order to the US yesterday for  snap peas and snow peas(mangetouts)
I couldn't find what I wanted here. I bought  3 packets of 50 seeds of Oregon Giant snow peas( mangetouts here) . I bought 3 packets of Sugar Snap snap peas also with 50 seeds in each. I also bought the following A packet of Lemon Cucumber,a packet of Small Sugar Pumpkins,A packet of Green Stripe Crenshaw Squash, a packet of Sweet Banana Peppers, and a packet of Heinz 1438 Tomatoes.

My bill for everything including shipping from the US came out to £10.10p.  XX Jeannine
