I will be planting mine 1st weekend in march as long as the ground is workable, there's no point if the ground is frozen or too wet. I'm in london so you may be a week or two after us. ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

john-the-window

are they red or white?
White  I would put in in your area twords the end of march.
Any earlier you might get a few go to seed.
Red  at the end of April
the reason is if you put red sets in to early a lot will go straight to seed

Well I never knew that John I put mine in together last year just copying other lotties on site as I was the new boy I will make a note of that. ;D ;D ;D

We started our 240 white sets (Turbo?) in cells in the greenhouse to get them rooting and shooting, we find the birds leave them alone so we don't spend weeks trying to get them back into their rows!
;D

I planted nearly all mine this evening, lovely mild weather and the soil has dried out and felt pleasant to the touch, if not exactly warm. (East Sussex).

So, if I don't actually have an area prepared to plant the onion set (and shallots), can I put some of them in , say 2" pots of compost in the cold greenhouse to give them a start?

Reason for suggesting 2" is that I have about 6/8 of those trays that hold 40 of them (as on sale in in Aldi tomorrow), so could actually bring on most of them now if it's feasible. Failing that, I also have hundreds of those 3" black plastic pots. You know, the ones that tear easily. Would they be better?

BTW, I already have 40 garlics growing that way.
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

On the Wirral too... I'll let you know when the rest of the guys on our plot do - copying's the best method I think!!!  :)

I found mine about 3 months later and planted them anyway and they look like spring onions now.

Hi Luckyme  glad to have a neighbour and so local to me  ;D

Can my shallot sets go out now as well??
My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in. Bill Shankly.

eric's put his shallots in, we've just finished putting the onions that were shooting in, we'll leave the rest a bit longer  :)

Marymary

I planted half of my shallots and half of my onions. I am going with the weather. If I lose them then I still have the other half eh!
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"
