Brussel Sprouts

I have just bought some Brussel plants and am going to plant them out at the weekend. I have been told it is good for them to be planted among maturing onions. Anyone tried this?

I've not done Brussels intercropped with regular onions but I do intercrop them with spring onions and salad stuff like pak choi, and that works just fine.

How widely spaced are your onions? When you lift them, would you be disturbing the soil around the Brussels? They really do like to have their feet in firmly tamped ground.

My onions are 4" apart and 9" between rows, grown from sets last October, well established. I was wondering wether the Brussels might be disturbed when i pull the onions, also a little worried that the Brussels might take to much water from the onions. I have plenty of plants so i might just try a few and see what happens.

I agree Tim, I find brassicas can cause a bit of a problem with rotation without aggravating it more!

Although I don't grow any more brassica varieties than say non brassica varieties I find that due to there wider spacings brassicas may take 50-60% of my entire allotment, which in turn could affect my rotation plans.

This is one reason why I even keep a note of how a bed is split up so that next year I can most likely avoid planting like genus in the same spot two years on the trot.

So I just take this as folklore and say;  where on the one hand it might work, and on the other it may create other problems.
