Good price but they should be stored until March or later depending on area otherwise they will rot in the ground or bolt when they grow

Thanks for that Glow, the packet says sow between Jan - May are they fibbing to me?

we got ours from b&q a couple of days ago, some were shooting, the red baron
and some were so small, I thought they might disappear if we planted them so
I planted them in cells to grow on, just half of the red and a third of the white, I've seen someone else doing this so, we'll see ?  ;D ;D

Wilkinsons have 100 for £1 too  :)

Tinkie you can sow seeds indoors Jan/Feb but sets are sown later after the frosts. :) ;)

thats a long range.

unless I am wrong and someone corrects me onions are bienniels meaning they take 2 years to go from seed to seed. However if planted too early they will catch a heavy frost and become dormant then grow again thinking 1 year has passed catch another frost think it is year two and flower. Planting as late as possible reduces the risk of this happening but reduces the amount of growth so you need to plant as soon as possible for growth but as late enough to avoid bolting hence March is ideal (most years).

Jan would be fine under glass and fleece in cornwall in a mild year so they are not 100% lying!!!!!!!

My planting window for onions sets is the last two weeks of March ... Interplanting rows of carrots.

The impossible is just a journey away ...

So will I be OK to grow on the tiny weeny ones in my unheated greenhouse or am I better to wait and put them all in the lotty?  Also where do I keep them until they go in - somewhere cool and dry is my guess but I don't know.

Thanks for your help and advise, I tend to believe the packets and end up disapointed !

save them all somewhere cool and dry. The smaller ones will grow just the same as the bigger ones, in fact they will be less prone to bolting.

If we all believed the packets we'd sow everything at the earliest dates eg parsnips outside in Feb and there would be a big queue of as at Tescos come harvest time
