Hi all, anyone out there got any lemongrass seeds? Let me know what you want in return.
Being cheeky now...I'm after stevia seeds too! Its a kind of herb that tastes like liquorice sugar, I buy it from the health food shop to put in my mint tea!! It would be great to grow it but its hard to get hold of.

I haven't got any lemongrass seed but I managed to grow it from a stick bought at the supermarket this year.  Hasn't got big enough to harvest though.

As far as I can remember I just popped a couple of sticks in some water and waited to see if they rooted. One of them did so I potted it up and it has been outside all summer.  I think I should have been feeding it etc, probably the reason it hasn't produced anything to harvest.  I'm going to bring it indoors over the winter and see how it does next year.

Fantastic!  I will write that down in my new notebook!  Saves relying on my brain, from which memory recall is becoming increasingly irregular!

Biscombe - I have just found some seeds on Fothergills and think I might get some, if I do I will share with you... Will PM you!    ;D

I grew them this year and they were very successful!

In exchange...well here is a list of the things I am after:

Don't worry if you don't have any of the above - I'll still send you them! ;D PM me!

Biscombe

Stevia virtually never sets viable seed - you're better off with taking cuttings. Unfortunately, left mine out last night, and I think it's a goner! :(

Propagating lemongrass is in this months RHS magazine.
It says that using stalks is the easiest method (rather than seed) and says to buy firm fresh lemon grass from the supermarket which has small raised bumps or a small root at the base.
Either put the stalks in water for 4/5 weeks(changing the water and topping up) and then pot up, or dip in rooting powder and plant in vermiculite, sand or seed compost. A third way is to encourage roots to grow in damp cotton wool before putting in compost.
I'd only just read the article and then I saw this thread. Hope this helps.

I went for the glass method. It works .....

Have been to Asda and got some to try = do you plant outside if so when ?? ???

valmarg

No Blue Bird you don't plant it outside as it is not hardy in the UK.  I've potted mine up into a 4" pot in multipurpose compost.  It's on the kitchen windowsill at the moment.  As it throws out side shoots, and gets bigger, gradually increase the size of the pot.  A good indication that it needs potting on is, when you turn the plant out of the pot, the bottom of the compost is a tangle of roots.

Thanks for the information have now got some in water as the photos shows and will pot on when have roots.

Cheers
