I am going to grow / hoping to grow cucumbers next year for the first time. I appreciate that most grown in a greenhouse should be best. But was wondering about outdoor cucumbers? Are they too much hassle, do they grow well or should i just stick with indoor? ???

always found outdoor cucumbers just as easy as indoor, also, we got burpless this year, lovely flavour, plenty of them and they didn't repeat on ray, he's never eaten so much cucumber  :)

I have always had much more success with outside cucumbers, they are no trouble and taste good.

Will they grow good on a bed of manure like pumpkins and rhubarb? Or should they be done in soil / compost

Mine go in the ground, don't do any special preparation and I always get a good crop and give tons away

again, what we do, we have two ways,
we do hot beds, a pit of straw or strong manure, soil over the top and plant in to this,
the others in a pit of old manure with a heap of soil on top in a mound so the water runs off

it works for us, no doubt you'll find others, let us know, with piccies, if poss  :)

I grow the outdoor varietie "long green ridge". I usually plant the seed on 31/03 on a heated seed tray. If I want four plants ,I put in eight seeds. I plant out on my allotment during the first week in May, but cover with a plastic bottle or a piece of fleece for frost protection. I normally cut the first fruit during the first week of July. I prepare the ground by digging in horse manure during the Autumn. The largest I've had over the years is 4lb 13oz. I sink an upturned plastic bottle between two plants, so the water goes straight to the roots and water any day it does not rain. The crop is normally two fruit, per plant, per week. They are grown up a wigwam of canes.

I grow lemon cucumbers outdoors and they attempt to take over the world!  We were eating cucumbers at every meal and the kids had them in their lunch boxes......just from one plant!  I wouldn't waste the space in my little greenhouse with a cucumber plant, much prefer to pack it full with chillis, peppers and aubergines!

Couldn't agree more, Burpless Tasty Green are the best for me but I still prefer indoor cucumbers, better flavour & even more fruit per plant

Depends how bad your plot is ... how far North, Up, or just exposed KT. I grow Crysatl apple and others but have to give one side of a 6x8 greenhouse to be sure of loads... extra plants go outside but hit and miss here...

I grew 2 lemon type in my 30 foot cold frame and they filled it! we had cucumbers coming out of our ears. They take no looking after at all apart from feed and water. I'll grow the same next year but only one plant. ;)
