I ahve grown runner beans in pots and they are 5 - 6" tall now. They are being kept in a cold frame up allot. Is it too early to put them in open ground, please advise?!?

It's a bit early for runner beans unless you're absolutely certain there won't be any more frosts in your area. Early May under fleece would be possible in the South.

If they get too high in the meantime, cut them back to about 6 inches. You'll get more stems that way in any case, but they'll have made a lot of root, so pot them on as well if they're in small pots at the moment.

Next year it might be better to wait until mid-April to sow them. Early May if you're in the North.

Thanks Sue.
I will remember that for next year, If I cut the tops off will that not stop them growing.

There are the test results from 23 varieties of runners in this month's Gardening Which?

I'll post them when I can find it
