(Lleylandi root if you don't remember) Well today the bed became twice as big and I mean from front to back, and top to bottom and side to side.

The corner of the patio has now been sacrified, so i've been digging up, soaking clay, sand, hardcore and STILL mammoth size tree roots.  I reckon I should still go down another spade depth though, and throw in the hardcore as a soakaway as that particular bed's drainage is pretty poor.

Still once it's done, i'll be using that as the smelly bed i.e. jasmin and honeysuckle climbing up the ballustrade (did i mention i now have a deck?  :P) and some other things at the front of the bed.

oh and all this work was in the rain.  i was bored.   ;D

ahh, but if i stop, i'll drop !

I started this thread to warn others what they might expect to find if they plant a lleylandi too close to a house and want to move it, but I've hijacked my own thread and turned it into a welcome to the deck thread.

And Lorna, look closely, you'll see the can !

I know that the pureists out there don't particularly like decking for a number of reasons, but it saved me hours of backbreaking work digging up the existing patio and relaying it (due to the collapse of the corner because of the lleylandi) and I don't particularly like lawns.

Everything you can see is ours, but our upstairs neighbour has the adjoining garden to the left, and hers is mainly lawn and beds so I don't think we've compromised the overall space at all.  Nice Mr Decking man is going to come back and build a retaining wall in between the two gardens (currently made out of pallets) so the design is continued throughout.  Neighbour "doesn't do" gardening so I think I may well have control over her patch where I can experiment with flowers.  The "hole" is infact hers (as was the lleylandi) but her lack of interest means i can play to my hearts content.

Whit woo Kay Pee! That decking is soooo posh!

your garden is lovely :) though i totally agree about the Lleylandii. it's evil stuff....3 sides of my garden are hedged by it about 10 feet tall. i don't know what to do with it. I don't wanna hack it down because...our house is on the corner and is exposed to 2 sides of the road to a not so nice community. so it shelters the garden a bit from the winds and also makes the garden a lot more private. But yea i hate it. i like very slow growing conifers with interesting colours....but this stuff is nasty.

Play while you can Misses, before neighbour's child grows up & invites all her mates to come round for a game of cricket ;D

MrsKP

s'ok Lish.  Not many have heard of cricket up here.  She'll be out the back smoking a joint and drinking her bottle of buckie if she's like any of the other urchins and I think i've got a couple of years before she even starts that.   ::)

Wahaj, the only thing I can suggest it lop off the growing tips.  If you try and thin out the tree you're left with a bunch of dead looking brown stuff that won't grow back, we know, we're doing it with No. 2 atm.  Eventually it will be but a stump !

Thanks for the comments peeps, I really am thrilled with it.  If ever anyone wants a good deck man you know where to ask.   ;D

For me it's the union of cucumber sandwiches and chilled Chablis on the lawn that makes cricket worthwhile. :P
