Hope all you experts out there can help me.  ;)

My 96-year-old great Aunt has just had to move out of her house and has given me quite a few boxes of unused Kilner Jars, 3lb, 2lb and 1lb.  Now these are all in great condition, albeit very dusty and the metal screw bands have gone a bit rusty.  The red rubber seals are there but obviously very old.

I have been looking on the net to try and find replacements for these as the glass jars are beautiful and I would really like to use them.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get these replacements?

Thanks in advance.

Linda. :)

I googled and came up with ebay but not much else. However I'm pretty sure Lakeland do them:http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/freshcool/preserving!3813_3814
I think you'd also get them in any good old-fashioned hardware shop. Also in John Lewis if you have one nearby.

Go with JennyM's recommendation: much better value than the ebayer I found!

OK, thanks for all that info.  I'll get looking. ;)

??? Erm. Word of caution - I just looked at that link and can only see lever-top jars and seals, or metal lids for large screwtop jars.

If I read this right, you have the seriously old school type with a separate glass bung onto which the seal fits, then a pressed steel ring (some '70s ones are plastic) which screws down to clamp it as it cools. My mum used to use these, now passed on to me. If so then the seals for the lever tops WILL NOT FIT.

I think John Lewis sell all the old types of narrow ring - slightly pricey I know, but if you don't want to wait to find them on Ebay. Or you could try an old fashioned ironmongers or similar if you still have one nearby.

Sorry if I've missunderstood and confused matters!

No I think you're right! The type of jar seems to be fairly crucial.

trojanrabbit - thanks I think that you are right in what you say.  I do wonder if they will be OK to use, although they are old the rubber seals look like new and the screw lids don't actually come into contact with the food.  Do you think this is right or should I look for replacements?

If they're old I'd be looking for replacements.

agree with anne - rubber perishes in mysterious ways :'(
