Some figures from yesterday's gardening course at Barnsdale - news to me, passing on for added interest ;)

Latest research on composting shows best results from raising temp to 50C over 3-4 weeks. Previous recommendation was to 70C for shorter period. It's now deemed safe to put veg waste with grey mould into the compost heap

96% of the nutrients that plants thrive on are derived from ... air! Gardeners obsess with the other (very important) 4%

It takes ten rows of onions/garlic to mask the smell of one row of carrots from cabbage root fly

A pair of nesting bluetits will collect between 7,000 and 15,000 caterpillars before their brood leaves the nest

A bat will eat up to 3,500 insects per night :o


Especially the last two - makes you wonder how they found out ::)

from the state of some of the veg through caterpillars, it makes you wonder how many there are if birds are eating them in that volume
