No I havent gone mad or lost my calender.

For most people January 1st is New Years Day, but for gardeners and lotties the true New Years Day is October 1st. Today is the start of a new season (autumn), summer and its droungt is behind us and its a chance for a fresh start in  the garden or on the allotment.

So let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year!

(Although looking outside it looks a bit more like January 1st than October 1st anyway! Probably get as much gardening done today as I would on that date too.)

it was absolutely throwing it down earlier and still the guttering hasn't been fixed out the front, so i've now collected to buckets full of rain water for the blueberries.

the sun is out now though and it's quite warm.

just going to go out to play now.

Happy gardeners New Year to you all.
Have been working hard in the garden since 10am. came in to phone my sister to finalise arrangements for Thursday and guess what!!! The rain is hitting the ground like ping pong balls. However, I can see a bit of blue sky in the distance so hopefully will get out there again.

I'd like the chance to actualy DO some gardening lorna. Dont mind if i did a bit then had to come in out of the rain. I have lots to do but when it hasnt been raining its been blowing a gale and not been nice to be outside in. :-( :-(

GC. I didn't manage any more gardening. Sun shone, I got as far as the greenhouse and down it came again.. I did manage to fill two wheelie bins (Lorna's and mine) with
stuff I had previously shredded so does look a bit tidier out there

what a lovely thought gc - just got a copy of Nick Kollerstrom's 'Gardening and Planting by the Moon' diary and what do you know, it starts on 1 October too. A great way to think of this time of year - never too late for a fresh start eh ;) Happy New Year to you too :D

Nice thought Richard!  Nice way to look at the start of October.  Got my Japanese onions and garlic today, so first potential crop of next season organised.  :D busy_lizzie

I think the idea of October the first being gardenings new years day comes form Monty Don. I think i read an article of his where he mentions it or  he spoke of it on GW. Anyway what with this more autumnal weather the garden certainly looks an feels different to what it did a few days ago.
