The wife and I pulled a few carrots over the weekend and we have had some carrot root fly attacks, and these are on the "Fly Away" which shouldn't be attacked as easily. Should we pull all of them now, blanch and freeze or is the worst of the attack over and we might as well let them grow a bit longer ??
Next year I can see some marigolds and fleece coming into play but as its only my third year I don't feel too bad. Last years carrots were so rubbish that the flys couldn't be bothered with them :-)
Thanks in advance,
David.

I'm leaving mine in.

If you do fleece, no need to fuss with Marigolds?

If there are carrot root fly present you would probably do better to harvest them now.  Carrot fly larvae can survive the winter in the roots (where they will continue to munch away) and can even move between roots.  In the days before fleece and mesh I used to lay the roots out on a path and blast them with the hose jet, which cleaned out a lot of the larvae.  Any with larvae still inside were not put into store.

Since I started using fleece and mesh my maincrop carrots remain in the ground until needed - generously soaked with coffee to keep the slugs off.

If you have fly harvest now... I grow my best in an old cold frame filled with home compost  being a good 18" off the soil the idle So and So's don't get in ...
