jars for jam from IKEA - beware

I just thought I'll mention that the jars from IKEA (in our local shop labeled "for jam"), which have a lid attached to them, are not air tight and can't be used for storing outside of the fridge. Try to pour a bit of water in it, lock the lid and turn upsidedown. Licking, isn't it? Disappointing.

We just recycle old jam jars... those cook in sauce jars work well, but need sending through several times to get rid of the taint..

My nana uses glasses from the supermarket - she doesnt liek to use jars as you can never get the lids properly clean.

If you want lots and are buying them try here. Annoyingly it doesn't give quantities for all of them but it's the cheapest place I've found so far and the delivery is pretty quick. ;)

If it's standard size jars you want, in large quantities, then it's worth looking at beekeepers' supply firms. I've only had a quick look, but you can get them cheaper here http://www.beekeeping.co.uk/catalogue/NBS%20Catalogue%20PG10.pdf .

I was looking at these ones in Ikea and they reminded me of the ones we bought in France that have replaceable rubber seals and really good for chutney and pickled beet - they appear to have rubber seals.  Think Lakeland also do something similar but dunno how much.

Yes, this is the type I was talking about. May be the rubber band isn't working properly, in fact it seems to be made of plastic, but I've got 4 of them and none of them is air tight, shame.

Mine have mostly been fine - but this thread sent me back to check again on ones I'd already used. Have just found 2 jars of passata unsealed that I'm sure I checked before and were OK!!! Fortunately the contents are still fine, so I've decanted them to freezer containers. Just as well I'm off on my hols this week so have got room. Thinks: Could have come back to some very funny smells from my store cupboard!!  ::) Thanks Natasha. Will definitely be investing in some passata jars and more ordinary jard next year - and thanks for the links to the bees sites, they are excellent.

I use all kinds of recycled jars like jam jar, mayonnaise jar, etc. I sometimes use pickle jars and in that case the jars and lids need to be soaked in warm soapy water for a while to remove the smell of onion!

Used the last recycled jars last night on Peach & Pear jam.  Looks like I will have to buy some for the first time, as still got pickled shallots, piccalilli, Christmas mincemeat to do yet.

Your not the only one, I found the same problem, only after I went to shake my blackberry brandy though and it leaked out.  At the moment I have to leavve it in there as I don't have any jars of any kind that I could put it in.
