Cabbage Recipe please help

I have a large cabbage stinking out my fridge what else can I make with it other than having it on its own. Is there a soup or something?

cut it, wash it, steam it, put butter on it and eat with almost anything - sausages and mash come to mind immediately - or you could bubble and squeak it, make colcannon with it - methinks you don't love it enough  ;D

Haha well Calendula I pulled up five big ones at the weekend and used some for dinner on Monday, gave some to 3 friends and i'm still left with one. I like to try and eat as fresh as possible but don't really like the smell when I open my fridge 20 times or more a day.

the famous cabbage soup......not sure of the recipe tho!......

you can also stir fry cabbage (with other things) - it's lovely or make coleslaw with some of it....is it a white cabbage or green?

If its a lovely dark green cabbage slice very very fine and fry! In chinese take-aways they call that seaweed!

I quite like it shredded and stir fried/sweated with: garlic, onion, chillies/chilli sauce, tumeric and cayenne... came from an Indian recipe book, but can't remember which one.

Then you take some lentil/dal soup (which you just happen to have prepared beforehand!), heat it up, and stir in a wodge of this spicy cabbage mix.

Rather nice as part of a meat & two veg meal, too.

In the same position as you Rosy.  I am busy digging up my cabbages before they finally all succoumb to the slugs.  I now have three big cabbages on my kitchen table.  We have had lots of steamed cabbage, and I made a huge coleslaw the other day, but I am a bit stuck too. Was thinking I would just blanch them and freeze, so will be looking for ideas here too. busy_lizzie

stuffed cabbage rolls? Usual stuffing is ground beef or turkey + rice, but Google, loads of recipes and ideas. 8)

I made this french rx, 'cabbage pie' (pate de chou) with some of my spring cabbages earlier in the year

cut up a cabbage and cook (boil or steam)

in a bowl mix 4oz chopped bacon or pancetta, 2 chopped onions and 2 chopped garlic, parsley and 2 beaten eggs. Slowly add 7 oz flour and 10fl oz milk to make a thickish batter

put some oil into a pie dish and heat (like you do with yorkshire pudding) and when the oil is hot pour in half the batter, cover this with the cooked cabbage and pour on the rest of the batter and bake for 45 minutues or until golden brown. Serve immediately, or you can keep it 'til the next day re-heated with some butter - ooh la la

Calendula I love that pate de chou idea....guess courgettes could be substituted too 8)

Hi All, I'm new here so, hello.  As my first post, I couldn't resist sharing my fave cabbage recipe - Barbecued Cabbage.  It never fails to grab the everyone's attention!

Fry some onions and bacon (if you're inclined, I'm veggie so don't bother) until brown.  I find this works best if you use butter - not the healthiest but def. the tastiest :)
Add an amount of BBQ sauce to the onion mixture to make a thick paste.  Once it's warm, set aside.
Cut out the core of the cabbage.
Make a ring out of tinfoil to stop the cabbage rolling about, and put the cabbage in it.
Fill the cabbage with the BBQ sauce mixture.
Baste the outside of the cabbage in a little fat to stop it drying out.
Put on the BBQ as soon as you start to cook as it takes about an hour/ hour and a half to cook on the BBQ with medium cabbage. 
The outside leaves will go black, so just remove those.  Cut into wedges and serve.

I've also baked this in the oven and that works just as well, although it doesn't look nearly as impressive.

Sorry there's no measurements, but it all starts with the size of the cabbage and the size of the hole that you cut - just make enough BBQ/ onion stuff to fill it ...

Similar to others, stir fry cabbage with onion, when cooked, place under grill with cheese on top, and brown.

ah the passion of originality, it's what drives us to be great gardeners/cooks  ;D

but it wouldn't be pate de chou it would be pate de zucchini, or whatever the italian name for pie is - probably frittata di zucchini  :)
