one of my Sweet Pepper plants could it be a virus...

I would say it is stating to ripen, I think this picture might explain it better;

I reckon it is just ripening... as long as you aren't saving seed and it tastes ok just enjoy the novelty factor...

The exact same thing happened on one of my cayenne pepper plants - i know yours are sweet peppers, but they must be similar? - anyway, after it went black it went red and all was good! ;D
