Can I store potatoes in a pillowcase?

If they were made of cotton I don't see any reason why not, but if the are made of nylon the contents might sweat resulting in possible decay.

Your pillowcases will allow light through so keep them  somewhere cool and dark

Funny you asked that question Lizzie.
Stored some in an old cotton pillowcase the first year I grew them, and they did turn green with the light. The second lot I dug though, I put in TWO pillowcases, one inside the other, stored in the garage, and they were alright.

mmm..but i think either feathers or kapok would be easier to sleep on.....

Or, if you shop at either Aveda or Jigsaw they put their products in great brown natural paper carrier bags, which are great too.  :) busy_lizzie

I did the same last year Roy and they were very forthcoming.  You would think they would be a bit more reluctant as you will be buying less from them but usually turns out to be not the case.

BBQ charcoal  bags are good.  Not as big as spud bags so less chance of storage problems affecting the whole crop...  Also easier to move.

I pass an animal feed merchant each time I visit the allotment so I get a few of their empty paper bags.

I just turn them inside out to ensure my potatoes dont come in contact with any feed residue.

Picked up a couple of potato bags from my local fish & chip shop this week- think it was another thread here that gave me the idea.

our veg boys at the top of the hill are always happy to give taty bags and hunion nets for free.,always ask at your chippy/deli for empty plastic buckets with handles and lids-free!

hi, regarding potatoes.  Mine are not ready yet, but they have green balls on top of the plant.  Does this mean they have gone to seed, and if so, what do I do?  It looks like I've started with potatoes, and ended up with tomatoes.
