Sorry, a repeat I am sure, but why was one of my cucs very bitter?  I only grow the white smally types, and the one that was iffy was something like short white - not the crystal apple which are delicious.

Iff its not an F1 and its been cross pollinated the result is a bitter cucumber.

Hi EJ ,This is why we used to nip all male flowers off on the older variaties to stop the cu's getting pollinated and tasting very bitter  or grew the f1's like femoral etc which didn't have male flowers... Some newer variaties now like market more etc don't need  to have males removed..Cheers Jim..

P.S  hope it aint put  No1 cu eater off them  :)
Cheers .. Jim

Sorry to ask, I was reading this thread and has me wondering... is this to say that all male flowers should be removed from most cucumber plants? I had no idea. I'm growing Burpless Tasty Green at the moment, I believe it's an F1. I was late putting them in and have some very small, bumpy skinned cucumbers growing and lots of male flowers, do I take those off?

Not for BTG.

It's a ridge type cuke, you can leave the flowers on these.  :)
I hoe, I hoe, then off to work I go.

Burpees are an F1 so there is no need to remove any flower and a very taisty cucumber.

Thank you.  Tis an old variety me thinks, so I will get frisky with the boys tomorrow and give them a pinch!  ;)

No Jim, my little cucumber scoffer is keener on the apple cucumbers, this was a short white which my darling and I had.  It was okay, just a bit tongue drying at times.  :P
