Hello,

My O/w onions are now looking as though they are ready. The tops are keeling over. Do you leave these in the ground of lift them out ?

What would you suggest I replace the space with. I have a place for leeks.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

F.

we've taken up all our overwinters, some people just lift them with a fork and leave them on the ground to ripen, we have to watch out for people taking them so they go home to dry..we have sowed beetroot, kohl rabi and swede at the moment, there will be lettuce soon, then chinese leaves later  :)

Thanks,

Excellent idea. SO beetroot, Lettuce and swede it is then. I want to use this space again next year for O/w onions. I put these ones in last November and intend to repeat this as we have had some really good results. Do you think this would be a problem ?

Thanks again.

F.

not sure, we usually rotate ours  :)
next year, this year's onion beds will be for squash, for us, onions follow brassicas  :)

growing onions 12months a year is not a good idea  esp on the same spot
the result is....onion mildew  and it will ruin your crop

Manics , Do you put anything in the ground. We usually put the broad bean haulms in the bottom spit with some manure and bonemeal. and later on in the year we lime.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

after the onions, Ray will dig pits in spring and fill with well rotted muck, the onion bed has green manure, then chopped up and covered, in spring, it's raked over, bfb is added and raked, just before planting and we put a bit of lime in the hole , the ground's getting better now, it's our 4th yr  :)

no, shirl, we have 2 onion beds and 2 squash beds per year, it gives the rotation a rest, the pits are for the squash  :)
