I want to grow some cabbages for the winter both for us and to keep our chickens in greens ;) - am I too late?  I don't know whether I should be sowing some seeds or looking for plants?

Any ideas on good varieties would be a help also.

Thanks

Linda.

January King looks beautiful and tastes good!
Depends how many cabbage you want - if a few, I'd buy plugs now. If I wanted lots, I'd sow - you can eat them at any stage after a few months :)
Take advice from someone who lives near you though - different varieties for different conditions. I'm in Peterborough!

Probably a bit late for seeds for this winter, though time for spring cabbage for next year still.

For winter I grow Tundra and January King with some decent results, I am also trying a new club root tolerant one called Kalixy that is meant to do be ready in the autumn.

You will be able to buy plants no problem, Dobies for one do brassica collections that are shipped in August for cropping in Jan to April:

I have just sowed some purple sprouting broccolli though.

Thought I had missed the boat PSB-wise,  which variety are you sowing Jerry?

Thanks to all - I'll look out for some plants.

Linda.

Mrs Ava

I have just sown brocolli corvet which is a winter type for sowing between now and September.

My packet of Offenham 3 Wintergreen says I can sow until August for lots of loose headed greens during the winter which will form a loose heart only if left till Spring - primarily for winter eating.

It was claret, might be a bit of a gamble but they are up and running so will see.
