This is my first year with both,

I've a cuc that is about 12cms long, which I'd probably try now but it's skin seems rather tough and bumpy (almost spiky!) it's Burpless green

And with the gherkins; there are plenty of little fruits (perhaps 4cms) and as you eat them small can I dive in yet? Again the skin seems rather tough and spiky, not very appetising! It's petit vert de paris

Do they kind of grow out of this as they produce more fruits / get bigger?
Both outside by the way.
Thanks

You can take gherkins as small as you like and will still probably end up with a surplus.

Gherkins - for pickling, one supposes - rather than eating fresh?

Burpless have tended to be a bit spiny, although they are breeding that out.

12cm is a bit young, - usual size is nearer 18cm. So it could be a little more bitter than later.

Yes. Can't wait to do my own...some onions and beetroot already started!

My cucs and gherks are always prickly!  Some rub off, but wear gloves!

Even some indoor cus are prickly.
