Sweet potatoes have set out runners now what?

My sweet potato plants have set out their runners just under the soil - now I am wondering what will happen.  Will new plants grow from these?  How do the potato tubers form in the ground?

How long does it take for sweet potatoes to produce?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
