Hello,

Would it be too late to lime my brassica bed at this time?

--just can't seem to find the hours in the day to get everything done...   ::)

Thanks,
Vaca

If it does need it........... then not too late. I also add lime to the planting hole at the time of planting to help combat my club root!  >:(

Does it need it??

Not entirely sure, it's the first year I'm working this plot and it was neglected for several years. I did a PH reading last year and it was quite neutral. I was going to lime just as good measure...

can you make lime or glean it from somewhere (bit like urine & nitrogen) or is it one thing that has to be bought?

tim

Vaca - assuming that your soil is pH7, unless you're worried about clubroot (we have never had it in 45 years) - I wouldn't use it.

If, as Jerry says, it's anti-clubroot, then these measures might be of interest? http://plantclinic.cornell.edu/FactSheets/clubroot/clubroot.htm

bl - don't know!

Thanks Tim, I'm going to test the soil again this week and follow your advice. I'm have no idea if clubroot was a problem in the past on my plot or not, so unless really needed, I won't lime.

Thanks,
Vaca

Jerry>>  how much lime do you add to the hole and what type of lime?
It'll be better next year

sandersj89

I use bog standard lime form a garden centre or Wilko's, J Arthur Bowers is one maker I beleive.

I sprinkle in about half a hand full into the planting hole at the time of planting out. Though I do grow on my brassica into 8 to 10" pots before planting out.

and it doesn't harm the roots when they come into contact, as in the same way as fertiliser for example?

No, not as I am aware or have experienced.
