Does anyone know how many allotments there are in the UK? Thanks.

Hi Clay  :)

The office of the deputy prime minister put the figure at approx two hundred and fifty thousand (but decreasing) in 1998 from a war time peak of just over one and a half million plots.

There is a website at http://www.odpm.gov.uk/

Sorry to be pedantic - but ODPM only covers England not Wales, Scotland or NI - so you need to add some on for a UK total. Have no idea how many there are here in Wales!

Hi Clay, Hi Periwinkle :D

Please be as pedantic as you wish.

Is there similar information somewhere for the rest of UK ?

According to the BBC there are approximately 330,000 occupied plots in the UK.

Hpwever, that is far from the whole picture, in the next town there is an entire site overgrown and unoccupied, I would love to know how many empty plots there are. Also many plots have been split into half plots, thus the true loss may be masked.

How was their list compiled and by whom? We are the second largest site in our city but as a private limited company, yes we actually own 12 acres of prime building land adjacent to the ring road, would we be included?

would the NSALG know the answer to that question? http://www.nsalg.org.uk/

I doubt it AB, but we are "persona non gratia" there just now as we defected to the other group!
