Moving rhubarb....?

Just discovered some rhubarb poking through the soil, exactly where the main path is on the lottie. How easy will it be to move?

It's not a huge plant, but then it will never get huge if it stays where it is!! ::)

I know rhubarb isn't keen to be disturbed, so what is the safest easiest method to relocate it?

Thanks.

We had a huge plant when we moved here and had to move it due to building work, just dig it up and re-plant it, ours came back took a couple of years though for it to re-establish itself.

Snap with gunnerbee foz, move it as soon as you can, whilst it's still cold-ish weather, straight into its new planting hole. It may not be easy to move, you might over-estimate the size of the root ball just in case when you're sticking the fork in.

Rhubub may not be keen to be disturbed, but it'll be a lot less keen to be trodden on ;D

shift it and then replant with lots of manure.  It will settle & grow back fine.
is it in the sale?

Hi Fozzylozzy and supersprout, Hi all, :D

Thank you for that little gem of wisdom  ;D ;D It will keep me grinning for a long time. I wish I wrote it first.

I moved lumps of rhubarb crown after splitting a huge one and I have leaves poking through now exactly where I want them but I won`t havest from them this year. The plant I will be harvesting from in a few weeks was moved twice after I got the plot.

I like rhubarb, next year I`ll be harvesting loads.

You gotta plan ahead.

Move it, and leave it for a year before you pick it. It'll be fine.

cleo

yep-just hack it out and replant. Where did you get the idea rhubarb has a problem with transplanting? Mine has moved four times over 29 years

RSJK

The ideal time to move rhubarb is in the winter when it is dormant, rhubarb as far as I know does not have a problem with being transplanted, infact I used to  ( a few years ago) lift a few crowns in the winter and leave them on top of the ground to let the cold get at them, when planted back in the grown they tended to shoot that little bit earlier in the spring, no harm was done to them.

...yes,its a real job...

Mine has moved twice in six years owing to changing ideas of how I want the plot laid out. It's coming up thick and strong.

gunnerbee

Yep you can even seperate clumps of it for future plants.

We have moved ours loads of times too and it has always transplanted really well. They do seem to like well rotted manure around the crowns (I usually do this in the winter) and  they seem quite hardy -  mine have never been bothered by frost. busy_lizzie

Glad you asked the question, Fozzy.
I shall now move mine with confidence.!!! :) :) :)
Smile, it confuses people.

Thanks for the replies.

We moved the rhubarb successfully today to its new home, let's hope it likes it there!!
