Can anyone tell me what you have to do for google to recognise a website and find it?  I belong to a dance club here in Belgium and we have a lovely new website but it doesn't pop up ion google searches.

Is there a trick or a notification procedure?

I'm still quite new to this web design thing so stand to be corrected but I think:

you can put in keywords in the metatags of the website and often the crawlers (not sure if that's the right word for them) pick up the keywords. Best option I've found is to put a lot of clearly descriptive words about your website on the homepage, explain what you're all about using keywords within the text and this seems to work for me. I'm not sure how to explain this ... as far as I know, you have more chance if your website is hosted so that the web address reads www.xyz.co.uk rather than www.your_ispname_xyz.co.uk, i.e. your page hosted with a direct web address not a web address within an isp's name....does that make any sense?

forgot to add...there's a website called alltheweb, if you go there you can ask for your website to be submitted for free, it's something to do with yahoo. Here's the link http://www.alltheweb.com/help/webmaster/submit_site

Thanks Jesse.  That's a great help.  It's a plain www.danceclub.be style address.

Now I shall translate the rest of your message into French for my colleague and also notify yahoo.

I'm not that sure either, but if you type my name into google (john humphries) I have managed to get first placing!

I think google rates site by a combination 'key words' in the title and the number of other sites out there that are linked to your own. Like most search engins they have a web crawler which trawls the whole of the web and should pick up your site in a couple of weeks if its on-line now.

Oh, I forgot that there are other little tricks, like if you want to include words which you don't actually want to appear on the front page, you can make them the same colour as the background of your page.

If you have identified another site which is getting the rating that you want, you can copy some of their words and put them on your page.

the easyest way to get google to find your site is in the design of the site you need to put meta tags in the codeing off the site here is an eg

these are the meta tags for alloments for all as you can see there are key words and content the content is whast should be shonw in the search engine eg google
the keywords are what are what the search engine bots look for
you will need some meta tags like these
where is the web addie for you so you can submit your site to google

http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

you are always guaranteed to be at the top but submiting your site to google helps

hope you dont mind aka dan i used the meta tags from here

Thanks DG.  All is OK now.  I've handed the website over to a proper techy person and he has completely redesigned it and google now knows about us too.
