Which should I grow?

Last year I grew Butternut squash, I could grow them again but I wondered if another small squash would be better.  One that I could train up a frame would be ideal and produce a few that I could use for soup and roasting.  I only got one Butternut last year, although I know it was a bad year.  Any help gratefully received!

I would love to be in the situation of wondering what to do with too many.... :)

How about jack-be-little pumpkin.......not too heavy, so they would grow up a frame....they make lovely soup and are tasty when roasted. ;)

Hi tulippa,  ;D
My favourite for flavour last year was blue kuri, these weigh in at about 1 kilo, & have a very nutty taste, they have also stored well all winter (in a cool garage)  & are still tasting very good.

Butternut is considered to be superb for flavour, so is worth growing for that reason. The UK does not seem to grow them well, so a new strain is available more suited to the UK climate - Cobnut, available from the Organic Gardening Catalogue. Crown Prince F1 is also considered a superb squash for flavour, personally I think this is culinary heaven when mashed with butter and a dash of pepper  :) However there are so many that I have not tasted yet. I can envisage secret meetings behind railway embankments, where covert exchanges of slices of gold take place ... :D

Curry : he he!  Pumpkin/squash tasting sessions, just what we need!

Adrian: I store mine in the garage too so that's useful

Agapanthus, I googled these, aren't they cute.  One site recommended them as soup bowls too which would be good for hallowe'en.  I have a veggie daughter and could cook her her own little squash which she would love.

Thanks for your replies, there are so many to choose from, at least I have some ideas now.

I'm trying Waltham Butternut, supposedly an 'improved' variety, from the Real Seed Catalogue. I'll report back later in the year.

I'm trying Marina di Chioggia this year after so many people have recommended it for flavour, not sure how big they grow though...anyone know?

Various sites accessed via Google describe it as 'medium' sized, therefore I would guess about 9" to 12" diameter. Just right for eating actually, probably doing two meals, or just one for a hungry family.

thanks Curry, sounds like it will be perfect for us. :)
