Does anyone have any experience of growing mushrooms on logs using mushroom dowels.

I have ordered a twin oyster and sh ittake pack which I am sharing with my lottie neighbour.

Any advice welcome

I`ll watch this thread with some interest as I have never tried. I have tried `bog standard` spawn with little success but have had amazing results from buying used,but not sterilised,spent compost.

i wanna grow mushrooms!
there was a small permaculture village at the glastonbury festival and they grew fantastic mushrooms on logs  ;D
when i looked on the net tho, the whole thing looked so expensive that it would be far cheaper to buy mushrooms (which kinda defeats the purpose).
i'd love to do this, so if you've found a cheap way please tell me how!

 the mushrooms are from the Dobies catalogue £9.95 for the twin pack divided by two people less 40% discount (allotment assosiation) = £2.00
logs are available at the side of the road (I work out in the country!)

So don't know about the cheapness - it depends how often and how many, if any crop. The blurb say 3-5 times a year 3 - 5 years ... here's hoping

I havent the full details these come with the dowels but it says freshly cut in the catalogue, other sites I have visited state hard wood logs, less than 3 months old

I've just bought a small, ready to grow, polystyrene box from the local garden centre for £2.99 ... its about the size of two hands and sounds as if its going to be very easy to grow - although if you have a family I guess you'd need a few of them.  I liked the portability aspect of it and will actually probably keep it in the kitchen / cellar rather than the allotment.

My granddad used to buy mushroom compost, which I remember, we used to look after in his garage, but this is going back about 20 years ...

I've ordered some mushroom spawn from t and m.  I've never grown them before.
We've got loads of manure on the plot so thought I'd have a go at  using that to grow them in.

Same as you, mine are in a black bag outside, just waiting until spring before I uncover them to see the results.

Just make sure you check them ! although shtaki and alike are quite ditictive some do look like eddible ones and CAN turn out to be a real kill joy !!!!

but i bought some spawn and didnt have much luck with it so i chucked it at one end on the allotment and did notice some coming through lat yr so who knows lol

I've got some shiitake and oyster mushrooms growing on straw&compressed sawdust mediums indoors now.I ordered them from Bakker.

Don't know much about growing them on logs myself but my parents grow their shiitake on log which need to be kept constantly dampish,in a shady spot.Just think how wild mushrooms grow in the woods....that's the kind of conditions you need for them.Good luck :)!

Did the caps dissolve round the edges into a sort of black inky stuff? The best I've been able to come up with is one of the ink caps, Coprinus atramentarius. If so, and there are other possibilities, then young specimens (which these would be) are edible, but definitely not with alcohol! It contains a substance which is identical to the active ingredient in 'Antabuse'. But I might be wrong about the identification.

I used to go mushroom picking frequently when I lived in France. The French  - or at least the ones I went with - seem to be very knowledgeable about all sorts of wild mushrooms. I've never dared do it on my own in this country. Never felt secure enough that I wouldn't pick something lethal I guess... :-[

Thee aren't many that are really poisonous; most of the 'bad' ones just taste nasty. I used to go mushroom picking, but always took the book.
