They're now covered in netting because of the pigeons but do they need to be protected against the weather as well?  I have dutifully kept all kinds of plastic bottles to use as cloches, should I use them for the cabbages, kales and broccolis   ???  First time I grow anything in the autumn/winter, I have no idea.
And if I do cover them with said bottles, how do they get watered?

I would think the netting will suffice as winter brassicas are hardy,
Most tasting better etc when they have had a bit of frost on them.

I'm not doing very well keeping slugs off.  Have got beer and slug traps but sluggie's winning  :(  the caterpillars have had a go as well but I think they've gone now

Egg shells!  I have, as it happens, turned out my homemade compost today and it's full of egg shells as I save em all from my B & B  :)   I've got more than a huge barrow full of the stuff, a great big garden sack and a trug full.  I shall put some of it under me cabbages when I've dried it off a bit and given it a bit of a stir.

Wardy, I cook mine in the oven and then crush them, gives you a nice gritty sprinkle!!  But they do stink abit when the oven is at its hottest setting! ::)

I could save them separately and cook a big batch together  :)

I just keep an old tray at  the bottom of the oven and lob them in when I use them, when the tray is full I crush them up and start again!
