Split Carrot

What causes this?  As you can see (under the mud) the carrot has almost peeled open to reveal the core.

I had split carrots last year. Dont bother to try to store them. The problem is caused by too much water usually after a dry spell. Carrots need consistant growing conditions

Did wonder if it were the water, similar to toms when they split.  I have only dug up about 3 like that so far this year, so not bad odds.
