Leaf Salad Italian

Do i have time to order some Leaf Salad Italian Seeds, plant them out in the soil and harvest them before the winter sets in.

Or, can anyone suggest leaf salad plants that i can sow straight into the ground over the next few weeks that will keep me supplied for the winter.

Actually that last bit sound rubbish... is it possible to do such a thing?

I sowed some chinese leaves a few weeks ago and they are going really well.  Picked some just now  :)  You can cut them as cut and come again leaves or leave each plant to grow full size.  I like them young so have sowed them thickly and pick them off as I need them.  I have some winter lettuce seeds to sow and also some Spinach 'Bordeaux'.  I think for the lettuce to last all winter it might need the protection of a cloche but not sure.  You can  sow White Lisbon (winter variety) spring onion nowish.  There are some Italian leaves to be sown now, eg Escarole which you can sow til October, radicchio which you sow now and harvest in March. If you have any mixed leaf salad I would sow a small amount and then you'll have time to eat some as they grow very quickly  :)

I have had italian mixed leaves in for a week or 2 now and they are all up and growing quickly!

If I don't run out of time, I plan to do some oriental leaves next week, along with black radish, mooli and some more spinach!  ;D

I planted oriental leaf salad about a month ago (69p T&M offer at garden centre), and have been amazed by the results. I also like them as baby leaves & sowed them thickly - the plants are growing faster than I can eat the leaves, and are delicious with my ripe tomatoes, carrots and a touch of raw grated beetroot. I'm going to try keep some winter salad growing under cover at home, but I suspect I'll just end up feeding the huge snails lurking in the ivy waiting to pounce.
