- we have had a lot of local problems with connectivity - local exchange can't cope with demand.

Coincidentally, we had a phone fault which, in diagnosis, meant disconnecting anything that might be causing it. So I disconnected the filters which were put in to 'reduce a hiss' - which I had never heard. Now I'm told that they 'split the signal', or something, as well??

From that time, we have been off-line - mostly - for 2 days. Until tonight, when a chap came in & eventually found that, by re-connecting the filters - bar one -  we could get back on line.

I had a similar thing Tim where with the filters made the phone line dead even when the internet was not ebing accessed!   I also came off-line for a while until I discovered that swapping the phone cables round on my surge protector and unplugging the old dial up wire sorted the problem.
