Had the second go at my new allotment today. Have to work a late shift today, so needed to abandon operations earlier than I wanted to! Have cleared a space 4X10 and have put runner beans in...they were a gift from guy on another plot.....great! Then as I finished the rest of the space someone else came over with 30 or so leeks (and a dibber and scissors to borrow) so I had to put those in!! I now have no space for my lollo rosso and radishes!!! Cannot get over how generous people are :D

This is the best thing I have ever done and have picked up loads of tips on this site....thanks one and all.

Question......how often should you turn compost to make it heat up quickly?

Katy - good to hear that everyone's being so friendly.  I've found the same thing on my site - neighbours watering and mowing for us, and my runner beans were a gift as well.  It's give and take so we've also watered when neighbour was abroad, and have given the odd plant as a thankyou (don't actually have that many plants yet!!)

I've had sweetcorn seeds and blackcurrant sticks from one neighbour and whole grown leeks and tomato plants from another- fantastic both.  I am hoping that next year I will be able to return these favours - I don't seem able to this year so far.

on my first day i was given a hoe, a fork and a rake and throughout my two years have been given many other things. we have had a few new plotters join us recently and i have been ablt to give them advice and seedlings. that is one of the most enjoyable things about haviong a plot, the camararderie, the crack and helping each other out. if i go down to the plot for 6 hours i may only get 4 hours work done as 2 hours is spent chatting. its like our own little community.

My first gift was from the elder plotholder next door after I complemented him on his tomatoes and asked him what the variety was so that I could grow them the next year. He told me and asked me if I would like some. When I said yes, he picked them all!! (a 10yard row) and gave them to me.

I protested and asked him what he would do for tomatoes - he told me he didn't like them and neither did his wife, when I asked why he grew them, he said it got him out of the house!!!  :D
