Have done a search but am struggling to find an answer, so....

Am still in the process of clearing some ground on new lottie and it will probably be near end of June when ground is cleared (due to hols, work, persuading hubbie to dig!).  I have runner beans and various pea seeds.  I want to plant them in pots so that I can at least start them off and then at end of June when plot is hopefully ready, plant them in.  Are runners and peas OK started off in pots?  I know my dad always started his runners in pots, but not sure about peas and my french beans.  Have Kelvedon Wonder and Norli pea, dwarf french bean (slenderette) and runners are Desiree.  Will pots be OK to start?   ???

Runners are definitly OK in pots - in fact better in pots as then you can bury them a bit deeper and this is supposed to help them bush out, makes them slightly compacter and increases yield.  Peas can be started in pots but do not like their roots disturbing.  The problems with sowing peas when the ground is still infested with weeds is one that is perplexing me and so far I have had no joy.

Thanks Redclanger.  Runners and some french beans are now in pots (ran out of pots; also want to so successively).  Haven't planted the peas yet but wondered if loo rolls was a good idea to avoid disturbing the roots?

Mrs Ava

I start all my beans in pots, and I have also started peas in pots as I keep loosing directly sown peas to the darn meeces!  You could bung a couple per loo roll, then plant the entire thing when you are ready.

Thanks EJ - loo rolls it is then!

By far the best way as the weeds don't get a foot in or birds etc. And don't they look so good to look at. You just feel so good. Put peas straight in the ground and I have had 1 pea and10 nastursions (can't spell) so now put the peas into little pots and it is working well. :)
