Me wheels have gone again. Northants UK

« on: June 15, 2010, 23:03:55 »

Here we are then, the garden has been almost cleared of weeds and there is a lot of planting been going on.
Flowers are going to be late this year but we have had a good show on the irises, ceanothus, and clematis.
Roses are not so good so far this year, plenty of time left to show their true colours if fed well and we get the right weather.
Apple tree planted earlier this year has not blossomed as yet but I think this will not happen for a few years yet. Same with the cherry which is now in a large tub, we shall grow this into a bush form not a tree.
Veggies are really doing well except the runner beans, spuds are a first this year in this home and are coming along fine. The cold frame is producing plenty of goodies too, now that the move is complete to its new place further down the garden.
Strawberries are green and waiting for the first flush of colour on them to grab one and eat it before the Blackbirds get to it.
Peas and broad beans are in flower with pods swelling daily.
Now for the strange and against all rules, I have put carrots and cabbages together.
This is not to be done in most books, but I have broke with convention and said to hell with it. It seems to be working for the most, no carrot fly or cabbage white to bother us. Club root seems to be held at bay, but I shall see how this works out with the joining of two types of plant which have different needs.
Updates will follow Grin

Finally finished the bit around the wheelbarrow.
I have planted up the edge with Aubretia and Alyssum saxtile.
There are other plants which have been put into the ground from pots which were in the cold frame.
I am really pleased with what I have done. Cool
I think there is a varicose vein coming on my leg and it hurts a bit. Sad
I shall have to finish the planting before I can rest it up. Cheesy

I did not think it would but the carrot have no fly on them and the cabbage is free from root fly and white fly and finally cabbage white have gone onto my cauli and avoided the cabbages. Just shows that things can work for and against you with gardening. Cool

Lol!  it's a case of laughing and crying at the same time!
I invested in some enviromesh this year and the brassicas (so far) are looking very healthy - but I guess in a garden you don't want to be looking at miles of enviromesh!!

I would like to see if they can produce a green colour to the fleece and enviromesh which would then be better on the eye on the lottie and in the back garden. Grin

Out of the gloom of losing some of the plants here is the good and bad of the garden today.
First the bad.

Now some good.

I just wish I could, but with shift work your time is limited to a few hours a days and not for sitting around. Wink

ahh yes, I remember shift work. Definitely not easy and often feeling muddle headed from sleep loss so it is all the more amazing what you've accomplished in your garden.

All comments and advice welcome.
We are not perfect in growing these plants but there are some who can help others with the odd hiccup which happens to us all over time.
