What sort of situation will it be in. If it is nice and sunny and you can bring it in for the winter, how about somethng in the citrus line.

Given the sort of winter we seem to be getting, perhaps something that can cope with having its roots frozen occasionally. What's your soil like? If it's limy, this might be your chance to grow an acid-lover like an azalea.

How about 'drawf' lilac...I've got one in large terracotta pot and it is very happy...and although the flowering season is short the beautiful fragrance is well worth it waiting for ;D Rest of the year I just plant few  bedding plants underneath to give some more interest.

I would put bulbs in from snowdrops to nerines and everything inbetween(daffs, crocus, iris, tulips, anemones, lilys, sparaxis, nerines schistostylus) to have flowers all through the year you can pop violas lavender ivy etc in the top.

or strawberries  or a climber to go up the wall

If you do use bulbs do remember that hardy bulbs like daffodils etc. can be killed if the containers freeze from the sides. You might need to wrap some fleece around the sides but not over the top. I lost a lot of very expensive exhibition daffs when we moved some years ago and I had no where to protect them.
