Allotments 4 All

I ordered 10 strawberry plants recently and was told they would be delivered in March 2006 - no problem i thought, will just get on with other stuff this year.

They have just let me know they could supply them now and would be sending them in 7-10 days.

They will be suplied as bareroot.

Will they still have time to produce fruit this year, or shall i just care for them and hope for next summer?

They're not from Thompson & Morgan by any chance are they?

The advice is always to pinch off the flowers that appear on one-year-old plants (which yours will be). But I couldn't do it!

But as yours are barerooted and so late in the season, I would say pinch off the flowers and give the plants more chance to get rooted and growing strong for next year.

Don't forget to peg down any runners that are produced to increase your plants.

Not sure about pegging down - I was putting them in a strawberry planter - Should i just cut off any runners an stick them in rooting powder/germination/seedling soil?

apparently you can pop the end of each runner on top of a pot of compost alongside strawberry planter and secure gently with one of those hair grips shaped a bit like shepherds crooks (are they kirby grips?), then they root and then you cut the runner from the main plant.   :)
