I received this plant today and was told it's a hardy climber and it now bears small white flowers which are now dying down.

Does anyone recognise what it is?  I am not sure whether to plant it in the sun, shade or half?
Any information much appreciated.  Thanks.  ;D ;)

I don't recognise it Marianne, its a bit difficult to see, I'll have a google to see if I can come up with anything. It was difficult to tell as a lot of sites didn't have pics. Hope you find out good luck.

Hiya Val,

Thanks so much for your reply.   :D I agree the picture is not very good - I will need to take a close up of the leaves tomorrow as it is too late now !  Bye for now !

:) Hi Marianne, Do the flowers have any scent at all  ???  :)
"I consider every plant hardy until I have killed it myself".

Marianne

Hi Marley, I don't think the flowers are scented.  It looks like a very pretty plant but does not look hardy enough to be out  ??? ::)

I'm probably way off course but could it be a very young Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris.

The leaves look right and it would be the right time and type for flowers about now. ???

Marley Farley

:) You could be right sukiwolf oval serrated leaves, dark green above paler & downy enderneath, flowering about now, likes a south facing wall or fence & is hardy. What do you think Marianne  ??? :)

Marianne

Hi Marley and Sukiwolf,

You know, the lady who gave it to me did say it was a type of hydrangea but I thought it could not be because it is lacking the large flower heads you see on those plants.  But it could belong to the hydrangea family !?  ???Now that 2 people have said the same thing, I will have to google to double check!
Thanks everyone for your kind help with this, I still haven't planted it because I am not sure of its position vs light and sunshine.  :)
Thanks to you too Val !  ;) ;D

Hi Marianne.
I planted one years ago but only got small groups of white flowers for the first year or two then the lacecap effect increased. :)

Robert_Brenchley

It could be one of the lacecap hydrangeas but I'm not certain. They do well in shade.

I've been waiting to see if anybody might have an answer so thought I'd put in my pennorth for what it's worth. I know it's supposed to be a climber, but the flowers & leaves look rather like a hawthorn.

Marley Farley

:) The leaves don't look like hawthorn  ???

Just googled crataegus images & I think there are lots of similarities though difficult to compare accurately.

Val

I thought that about the flowers...sort of similar..but they aren't climbers..well at least we know now , its a climbing hydrangea.makes me wonder, are they very rampant?..It looks so pretty.but I don't want a take over.

Marley Farley

:) Just don't let it take over if it is showing signs of that just clip it back :)

Awww thank you so much everyone!  I really appreciate everyone's help with my query !  I will try and find a place for it in semi shade, although that means it will not be able to climb the fence, IF it is a climber. LOL

Thanks again !  ;) :D
