Allotments 4 All

My peas have been a complete disaster so far. I thought I was 100% safe using a net, apparently secured all the way round the sides, but the majority of the peas were taken, presumably by mice. Any are there any better ways of doing it? :'(

Hi, I was told by one of the older allotmenteerers on our site to plant my peas in trays and put a pane of glass over them, because the mice pinch them otherwise. This I did  most of them have come up o.k. Will leave them in their seed trays, minus the glass till they're a bit bigger before planting them out.....Hope this helps :)

::) I'm confused  ::) surely Sam you are talking about sowing outdoors if you are using a net and not in a tray ??? or are you putting a net over a tray ??? ::)

That's right, Roy, I was talking about sowing peas on my allotment, obviously outdoors. I also had serious mice problems with my broadbeans. I must have sown around 60 Bunyards Exhibition direct - I think two of them came up. I went into pots from then on.

I sowed my Bunyards in 4 pint milk containers cut in half and they flourished and after transplanting them outdoors, something appears to be nibbling them >:(

try soaking the seeds in parafin for a couple of hours - it sure deters Mr.Mouse and the peas taste fine.

Roy - I have had nibbly leaves too - apparently a pea weevil.  Most of mine have got past it now and growing ok.  Doesn't do permanant damage.
