I'm sure I read somewhere that if you want to take Forsythia cuttings it should be just after they have flowered?
Am I right and which way is the best way to take cutting off it?

Palustris

Standard advice is to take them in October. 18 inch long pieces, cut below a leaf joint and inserted to half that depth in a sheltered spot Make a slit trench and pour silver sand in then push the cuttings in and close up the slit.
Alternatively you could take a low growing branch and peg it to the ground, anytime and it will root. Both methods take about 12 months to produce a well rooted piece.
Mind I'll bet if you took 6inch pieces now, cut below a leaf joint and inserted them in sandy compost under cover, they would probably root.
Gardening is the great leveller.

Hi Jo, Yes, they will root very easy now.,
At the back of my allotment I have a row of 5 mtr. of Forsythia. I did prune them back after the fowers had gone 3 weeks ago, I think.
Forsythia can be started from hardwood and softwood cuttings, or layering in early spring or autumn.
pruning in April or May: put them in water to start roots growing or stuck in ground without rooting them first. they root very easy in sandy soil. About 4-6 weeks. I put a few in the soil for layering but most of my cuttings are growing.
