What varieties would people suggest?  Do they need protection from birds?

Over forty years ago, in Herts, we started with summer raspberries. Fruiting end June into July, over about three weeks, we always had to be there for the harvest.  We had to cover them with net curtains, and unless we sprayed them with insecticide earlier, they would always have maggots. 
We then changed to  autumn raspberries.  Because they fruited later, the blackbirds had other food to eat, maggots were never a problem, and we no longer had to make sure we were there for the harvest.
Win, win, win!  Since then we have always had autumn raspberries.  Where we now live, in the French Pyrenees, the first fruit start in May, and we are still gathering.  A long autumn!
