For the first time I grew some jalapeno peppers. I cut some green ones  the other day, took out the seeds and tasted a tiny bit of them to gauge the hottness. There weren't hot at all - I could eat the whole pepper and it tasted like a sweet bell pepper!! I searched the web and it seems the hot bit is the seed!
Will the pepper flesh itself become hot as they grow on - perhaps when they become redder

I always thought that jalapenos were sweet peppers but long and pointy rather than round.

My jalapenos are definitely hot, but pleasantly so, rather than painful. They are still hot without the seeds, and I can comfortably eat one. Not sure why yours have no heat, but perhaps they aren't fully developed. Earlier in the year my cayenne peppers seemed to have no heat, but they certainly do now. I only let the jalapenos turn red when I'm saving the seed. I think they taste better green.
