Allotments 4 All

I would like to grow some leeks again this year, I grew some a few years ago, but cant remember what variety they were.
What would be a good variety to sow?

Musselburgh are very reliable for me,and the taste is good too.Although there are numerous varietys on the seed companys website,im going to try some other types pf leeks as well this year,but my main ones will be musselburgh.

Musselburgh and Autumn Giant for me, the latter is ready Oct-Dec and the former Dec-Mar.

I saved 'Bleu de Solaise' seed last year. I found it a good hardy leek so i hope my own seed will be as good as the parents.

I covered mine with ikea net curtains great crop.   Grew Musselburgh,  slower than I expected but they are still fine.

Leek moth, it's pretty bad round here, though last year was so horrible they weren't such an issue, I expect we'll get onion fly sooner or later too... then I'll really cry  cos I love onions....

I am growing Musselburgh, Electra, Elefant & Oarsman.

For years I have only grown Musselburgh because of its reliability, but when I went to Harrogate Spring Show last year I bought some Oarsman seedlings from the NVS stall and they turned out to be the best I have grown.

I sourced some seeds and have already sown them along with the others and the are (even at this stage) looking better than the other three varieties.

Electra & Elephant are recommendations from the MD of DTBrowns who I met at Harrogate.

He gave me Elefant  free of charge to trial them for him, these turned out similar to Musselburgh, in fact I stil have a few left on the plot which I have been unable to get at because of the snow!

At the autumn show he recommended Electra so I bought a packet for one pound, so I am trialing these this year along with Musselburgh, Elefant & Oarsman.

gotta agree = oarsman - top leeks. Enough to make you blanch at the cost but sterling performers, a few still standing on the plot  looking perfect and tasting fine. Wouldn't grow any others now and the cost has decreased as they are more accessible.
